These short "prose poem" essays contain many of the most powerful and evocative metaphors I have ever encountered. Keane has chosen to write only in lower case, which has the valuable effect of slowing down one's reading speed to relish the extraordinary imagery.The reason is that while there are periods separating his elegantly formed sentences, every once in a while one's eye skips right past them without the added clue of a following capital letter, and only a sudden sensation of surprise calls one back to find the point where the focus changed. Other poets might break the text into pieces to get a similar effect, but I think that would lose the narrative sense that these little (rarely more than a page long) tales are presenting.
Simple ideas are often the strongest. The idea here is that, without using any specific magic, a self-aware being becomes or enters into a thing or creature or person, and describes the experience in perfectly clear first-person language. Other writers have temporarily placed their human characters into birds and beasts through the use of magical spells, but I'm not aware of anyone just assuming the alien statuses and describing the experiences of "being" them.
Keane is a well-known practitioner of Japanese garden design and writer on its history, as well as essays on the emotional or spiritual underpinnings of that art. This book is a fascinating creative journey which will draw the reader into experiences both widely new and at the same time completely familiar -- a remarkable achievement.

Dear Cloud is a book that I would recommend highly. It is written in a very unusual poetic style, presented in the form of short stories. The book is concerned with the inherent inter-connectedness of beings and all things. It is easy reading but will require much contemplation regarding the many things that exist that we all take for granted. This is a truly thought provoking book, one that I feel most readers will enjoy. This small book has the power to transform the way one views the world and is joyful reading as well. Highly recommended.
Marc Keane's Dear Cloud is a most unusual work. It is very easy to read - short chapters. Each stands alone as is its own short story. Some are are very light and happy some are heavy and sad. Each has a message. Each requires a pause for thought. It can be conveniently picked up for a few minutes like a book of poetry.
It is mostly about understaning who we are. One episode ends "to know the stuff what we are made of isn't that why we look?" Another ends "we know what best we are when we are without"..
What an incredibly delightful book and experience!
Each chapter conveys such an intimate relation with a different manifestation of existence gifted with consciousness.
As the book unfolds and the conscious agent continues to inhabit different perspectives I got a renewed appreciation of life, of the gift of consciousness, the amazement and weariness that accompany traversing this world, and the emptiness and suchness of its source.
